The Software was first launched in September 1998 but is no longer supported. A new and much expanded version is now available.
Version 2, published September 2007
This program (designed for modern Windows operating systems, including Vista) is a comprehensive and easy to use resource for plant virology with much valuable background information on other viruses. In brief, this includes:
- Taxonomy: an up-to-date listing of virus families, genera and species including all viruses with ssDNA or RNA genomes. Only the true dsDNA viruses are excluded.
- Virus Descriptions: 417 descriptions of plant viruses (or virus groups = genera/families) written by specialists, complete with diagrams, EM images, pictures of symptoms etc. This includes all 354 published by AAB in paper form in the period 1970-1989 and over 60 more recent ones that are only available electronically.
- Notes: Brief descriptions of each of the approximately 60 families and 250 genera included. These summaries include links to electron micrographs (plant viruses only) and to genome maps.
- Sequences: Classified lists of all plant and fungal virus sequences available from the public sequence databases arranged by current virus name and genus. All plant and fungal virus sequences with one or more complete gene (>14,000) can also be displayed in graphical format in the Map program. The sequence display enables the nucleotide or derived protein sequence from any open reading frame to be displayed and copied to another Windows program. A representative sequence of every completely sequenced phage or animal virus with a ssDNA or RNA genome (>900 sequences) is also supplied
New descriptions will be added as they are written and the taxonomic and sequence data will be regularly updated and provided free of charge to purchasers of the CD by means of downloadable updates to the software.
