Notes on Genus: Ephemerovirus
enveloped bacilliform
Type member: Bovine ephemeral fever virus
Contents
General Description
This is one of the animal virus genera in the family
Rhabdoviridae. The genus is characterised by its bacilliform, enveloped, particles which contain a monopartite ssRNA genome that is more than 12kb in size. The name is taken from the type member.
Morphology
Virions are bullet- or cone-shaped, about 140-200 nm long and 60-80 nm in diameter.
Genome
Monopartite, linear, single-stranded, negative sense RNA, about 15000 nucleotides long.
Genus Genomic Organization
There are the five structural proteins common to all members of the family and several additional genes, encoding a tranmembrane glycoprotein and other proteins of unknown function, between the G and L genes.
Type Member Genomic Organization
The genes are listed here in their order on the template strand (i.e. from 3' to 5' with respect to the virion strand):
ORF | Gene | Product | Function |
1 | N | 49.1 kDa | Coat protein (nucleocapsid) |
2 | P | 32.2 kDa | Polymerase-associated phosphoprotein |
3 | P' | 5.8 kda | P protein overlapping ORF2 |
4 | M | 25.5 kda | Matrix protein |
5 | G | 72.3 kda | Glycoprotein |
6 | GNS | 68.8 kDa | Transmembrane glycoprotein |
7 | alpha 1 | 10.7 kDa | unknown function |
8 | alpha 2 | 14.2 kDa | unknown function |
9 | alpha 3 | 5.7 kDa | unknown function |
10 | beta | 12.3 kDa | unknown function |
11 | gamma | 13.4 kDa | unknown function |
12 | L | 249.8 kDa | Polyprotein with replicase and other functions |
