General Description

This family is characterised icosahedral virions about 30 nm in diameter and a single component of single-stranded C-rich RNA. The RNA encodes a large replication protein and a coat protein translated from a 3'-coterminal subgenomic RNA. There are additional ORFs in some genera.

Morphology

Virions isometric and icosahedral (T=3), not enveloped, about 30 nm in diameter.

Genomen

Monopartite positive sense single-stranded RNA of about 6-7.5 kb. The RNA encodes a large replication protein and a coat protein translated from a 3'-coterminal subgenomic RNA. The 3'-terminus may have a tRNA-like structure or a polyA tract, depending upon the virus.

Genera in the Family

  • Maculavirus: genome >7kb; phloem-limited; no known vectors
  • Marafivirus: genome 6-7kb; two coat proteins; transmitted by leafhoppers
  • Tymovirus: genome 6-7kb; single coat protein; transmitted by sap and by beetles
